Kevin Griffin, best known as the lead singer of the hitmaking nineties band Better Than Ezra, has called Franklin, Tennessee, home since 2010. He describes the city twenty miles south of Nashville as “a magical place” that blends history, striking architecture, neighborly hospitality, and small-town vibes. A decade ago, while out on a run in the area, he discovered the Park at Harlinsdale, a 230-acre former horse farm. Its bucolic setting sparked the idea for Pilgrimage Music & Cultural Festival, which will celebrate its ninth anniversary in September with the help of the Black Crowes, the Lumineers, Zach Bryan, Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats, and more than twenty other acts. Below, Griffin shares a few recommended Franklin hangouts, no matter when you’re in town. —J.F.

Stay

A great place to stay is the Harpeth Hotel on Main Street; it’s right in the heart of Franklin and will celebrate its fourth year this fall. The newest addition to the area—it’s just next-level—is Southall Farm & Inn. There’s a main hotel, which is gorgeous, and then architecturally unique villas around the property. They have trout fishing, falconry, and archery.

Fuel

Biscuit Love is right downtown, a block off the square. They have an incredible breakfast and the best fresh-squeezed orange juice. They have one of those orange-pressing machines; I love looking at them because it feels so Willy Wonka. Their “bonuts” are doughnuts-meets-biscuits—they put fresh whipped cream and blueberries on top and it’s so good. Merridee’s and Franklin Mercantile Deli will both give you a great, old-school Southern breakfast experience.

There’s a one-of-a-kind place called Kimbro’s Pickin’ Parlor. They have music every night—cool indie rock to country and Southern gospel. They have an incredible vinyl collection. You’re encouraged to change the records and put on an old Dire Straits or John Prine record.

A ten-minute drive away is a little hamlet called Leipers Fork; if you look in the dictionary for “quaint village,” this would be it. There’s an amazing place called Fox & Locke. It’s a restaurant, but more importantly, it’s a beautifully appointed music venue that has had everybody from Jason Isbell to Butch Walker to Miranda Lambert. They’ll just show up and start playing.

My favorite clothing store is Franklin Road Apparel Company on West Main Street. It’s one of the best men’s stores anywhere in Nashville—they have brands I love like Rag & Bone and Faherty. I’m a big fan White’s Mercantile, owned by Holly Williams, who is Hank Williams’s granddaughter. I love their T-shirt selection.

I’m a teetotaler, but I’m [often] with friends who drink. Cork & Cow is a great steak place that has amazing bespoke cocktails. My wife is a big aficionado of tequila, and they have an incredible selection—all the blancos, Clase Azul, Casa Dragones, and hard to get mezcals. O’ Be Joyful is a cool little funky bar that has great cocktails and amazing single-barrel whiskeys—it’s like going on the whiskey trail in this bar. For amazing wine, there’s JJs Wine Bar. It’s got a cool vibe because it’s in a Queen Anne house that’s been turned into a wine bar with amazing tapas.

The Park at Harlinsdale Farm—that’s where the Pilgrimage Festival is—is an amazing thing to do during the day. Just go and see the grounds, which are 230 acres [with hiking, fishing, and a dog park]. Percy Warner Park, about ten minutes outside of Franklin, has amazing loops, mountain biking, and hiking. They also have horseback riding where you can rent a horse. There are several outfitters that rent canoes for the Harpeth River. We’ve done that with the kids and it’s a lot of fun.

The proposal made it through its first reading among city leaders. The next public hearing is August 8 at City Hall.

FRANKLIN, TN. (WSMV) - There are a number of signs displayed along Franklin Road in opposition of a proposed development called the “The Middle Eight.”

Bryan Currier is one of the many Franklin residents with a sign in their yard that says “Stop the Middle Eight.”

Currier has lived in the area for the past nine years.

“I love that there’s this community feel, that there’s a neighborly feel. The fact that it really does have that historic southern charm to it, it makes it really neat...that doesn’t flow with that at all,” Currier said.

Currier is referencing The Middle Eight development planned by The Truland Group which would consist of open spaces, gathering places, parks, in conjunction with 254 units and 21 townhomes on 7.2 acres of land facing Liberty Pike. The development would sit across from The Factory and Daniels Drive.

The Heritage Foundation of Williamson County, a preservation organization, announced their opposition to the project if the developers don’t make some changes.

“With the high density, the massing, and the fact that it does sit on critically historic significant property,” said Rachael Finch, Senior Director of Preservation and Education with the Heritage Foundation of Williamson County.

The Foundation wants developers to use ground penetrating radar, and archaeological study done on the property that dates back before the Civil War.

“It was actually a horticultural family. They had a nursery with flowers and fruit gardens and were quite significant actually before and after the Civil War. We have reason to believe there’s an African American refugee camp that also was encamped within that vicinity,” Finch said.

Amanda and Toby McKeehan, with the Truland Development Company, own and live on the current property. They’ve been Franklin residents for almost three decades and ensure the community this is a positive investment into Franklin.

The Truland Development Company released a media statement to WSMV 4:

“We have been diligent to ensure that we have met or exceeded all existing guidelines and procedures. Since approximately half of the land lies within Franklin’s historic overlay, we spent four months with the experts on the historic zoning commission board as they reviewed our plans and considered the historical context,” said part of the statement from Amanda and Toby McKeehan.

“I know he and his wife are pretty well, and they’re just good people and they care about Franklin and I don’t think they’ll do anything detrimental,” said Ron Shuff, an area resident.

Shuff has lived in the neighborhood for 42 years. Other than traffic congestion, he trusts the developers will do right for the community.

“It’s an opportunity for him to cash in on the investment he made years ago,” Shuff said.

And while Currier says he appreciates how the city of franklin has managed the enormous growth over the years and it would be a mistake if they go through with this.

“This is a step in the wrong direction for preserving what makes Franklin special. And rather than add to it it’s going to take away from it,” Currier said.

The proposal made it through its first reading among city leaders. The next public hearing is August 8 at City Hall.

We’ve lived in the wonderful historic Alpheus Truett House in Franklin for nearly 30 years and have had the pleasure of raising our five children here. Franklin is our home, and we are deeply invested in its people. As stewards of the seven acres of property behind the Truett house, we have diligently protected it from many developers over the years who were responding to the city’s vision for density at this location. The combination of the exciting revitalization of The Factory and the recognition in Envision Franklin of our property being appropriate for multi-family housing led us to think about how we could use the property to help serve the housing needs of Franklin while holding on to the beauty in our own back yard and the character of the district around us.

To that end we decided to create our own development company, Truland (trulandgroup.com), in partnership with a longtime friend and multi-family developer Charles Rulick, a former Franklin resident who understands the unique nature of our community, to create a thoughtful plan for the best possible use of the seven acres behind our home. FRANKLIN, Tenn. (WKRN) — Many Franklin residents have recently learned about potential risks in their drinking water, making this the city’s Water Management Department’s third violation in the last three years.

“This exposure is one that is a risk over many, many years. It’s not a short-term or immediate issue at all for folks,” said City Administrator Eric Stuckey.

The City of Franklin sent a notice to all residents in the mail on Tuesday, May 9 about its water service violating federal drinking water standards by using too much disinfectant byproduct.

“We do a series of treatments to make the water safe and to address things like algae or microbial bodies that could be in the water. So, we use chlorine and things like that to help treat that. That’s a good thing; we’re fighting against things that make the water unsafe, and we’re making it safe,” Stuckey said.

The violation came to light after a water test at the beginning of 2023 through the end of March.

Although residents just received a notice about the violation from earlier this year, a water sample two weeks ago showed the levels are back to normal.

“Maximum results from that measurement was 0.0479 mg/L. That’s versus the standard of 0.080 mg/L. When you look at it today, with the most recent measurements, and then you also do a 12-month look back, it’s all in compliance now,” Stuckey said.

The city said the water is safe. There’s no immediate action that residents need to take, and they’re working on addressing specific areas with higher risks of a byproduct buildup.

“In the last couple of years, we have created more looping, more connections, so the water keeps flowing. We are cycling water more rapidly or more quickly through our storage tanks. All those contribute to improved systems and us coming in at these numbers that are now significantly below the standard,” Stuckey said.

FRANKLIN, Tenn. (WTVF) — For nearly one hundred years, there has been a tradition in downtown Franklin. Today, a city, a staff and many loyal customers are hoping that tradition hasn't just met an abrupt end.

There are some who love going to the Five Points Post Office in downtown Franklin because of three familiar faces behind the counter.

"That doesn't hurt!" laughed Paulette Johnson, standing next to co-workers DeeDee Bumpous and Trinka Dykes. "We're very entertaining."

"It's not just a community post office," Paulette continued. "We have fun!"

"It is a character fest!" Trinka added.

"This building opened as the Franklin post office in 1925, and it still has the original PO Boxes that it did back then," DeeDee said. "I know the box numbers, and I know who belongs to them. They don't even have to tell me their name."

Come into the Five Points Post Office today, and you won't find DeeDee, Paulette or Trinka. You'll find the front desk locked up, and a sign re-directing people to another post office.

"Corporate post office had us put slips in the boxes saying, 'we will be closing for good June 30,' and by golly, that's what they've done, and they have no intentions of re-opening," DeeDee said.

"People stop me and ask, 'do you still work at the post office?'," Paulette said. "Well, I did."

This is a contract postal unit, meaning an owner runs it for a contract period.

"In the case of the leased facility...the lessor chose not to renew the lease," A statement from the US Postal Service said in part.

We talked with that lessor, Jeff Nichols, who told us he gave his notice back in January that he'd be leaving later in the year, and he thought someone else would take over. He said there were people interested, trying to reach corporate to apply.

"This is an institution that's warm and sentimental, and I just hate to see it go," Trinka said.

"The city is very, very interested in continuing having a postal unit there," Franklin Mayor Ken Moore said. "We think it adds to the vibrancy of downtown, but it's also a service to our businesses downtown."

If a new owner comes on board, three familiar faces said they'll be back.

"We have a board behind the counter that is full of pictures of people who come in quite often that are family to us," DeeDee said. "We need to be a squeaky wheel that gets greased and gets a new owner."

DeeDee told us, as of the plan right now, boxholders will no longer get mail at this Five Points location. She said boxholders will have to get their mail at the Oak Meadow location, and it will be sent back to the sender after 11 days. A lot of their regulars are still learning this news.

It’s set in the rolling hills outside of town but has easy access to shops and restaurants. One thing is certain: there’s never been a better time to visit Franklin, Tennessee.

Nashville International Airport is the best way to reach Franklin, with flights daily from major US cities. From there, it’s a 40-minute drive into town. If you don’t want to rent a car, you can take a taxi or ride share. If you’ve got plenty of time, drive the Natchez Trace Parkway, which runs between Natchez, Mississippi and Nashville. It’s one of the most scenic drives in the country and the section near Franklin is stunning. Make sure to stop by the iconic double-arch Natchez Trace Parkway Bridge.
