NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — The popular East Coast convenience store “Wawa” has its eyes set on Bellevue for one of its first locations in Middle Tennessee.

Metro Councilmember Dave Rosenberg announced on Facebook the company proposed placing a store on Highway 100 near the intersection of Temple Road.

“It’s not been entirely positive, but the positive folks have been incredibly enthusiastic. Wawa appears to have quite a cult following. People who love it, you know the comment it’s not just a convenience store kept coming up,” said Rosenberg, who represents District 35.

On Facebook, some raised concern over traffic if Wawa opens on Highway 100; however, Rosenberg said he didn’t think Wawa’s opening would have a direct impact.

“Highway 100 needs to be adjusted one way or another. They issued bonds to widen it decades and decades ago and the state just has not made it a priority. So, would love to see that either way,” Rosenberg said.

News 2 spoke with Eddie McGrew, who lives and works in Bellevue. Although he’s never visited a Wawa, he welcomed the idea of a new gas station.

“For me, having that a little bit closer and having a few more options to be able to have something to eat or what have you, I think it would be great,” McGrew said.

McGrew also said the Highway 100 location made sense, with the nearby Loveless Cafe and Natchez Trace Parkway.

“There’s a lot of people that are not from around here that come here just for those purposes. With that kind of traffic, I think it would be good for that type of store.”

The proposal is still in the very early stages and the land would have to be rezoned. Right now, Rosenberg said he’s working to gather community input.

BELLEVUE , Tenn. (WKRN) —Residents in one Bellevue neighborhood are wondering where there mail is.

“Yesterday was my birthday, and I didn’t get to get any cards in the mail,” said Darah Kerpka.

But it’s more than birthday cards Kerpka seems to be missing from her mailbox.

“I noticed last Thursday when I got my mail viewer and I knew what to expect, and then it didn’t come. (I said), ‘Okay, we’ll just hope it comes tomorrow,'” she said.

It’s been nearly a week and Kerpka hasn’t received any of her mail.

“I started asking my neighbors and then they had the same response. ‘No, we haven’t gotten it either,'” she said.

Kerpka said nearly everyone in her Stonemeade neighborhood hasn’t received their mail, including Patrick Harris who returned home from vacation, expecting important documents.

“It puts a concern because it’s financial issues,” he said. “So, yeah, you’re talking about tax information and then also I’m replacing a credit card.”

Kerpka finally received some mail Wednesday morning, but she’s still missing days worth of mail, including tax documents, medical bills, and her son’s allergy medicine.

“For them not to actually tell us where they are or when we will get them, that is concerning,” she said.

For now, all Kerpka and her other neighbors can do is wait.

“I’m hoping, but I’m not optimistic,” she said. “But I’m definitely hoping.”

Kerpka told News 2 she called her local post office numerous times, but no one picked up. She also filed a complaint and went to her local post office Tuesday, where she was told her mail from the last several days was not there.

The mail carrier she spoke to Wednesday told her they were working on sending out more mail carriers to distribute mail later that afternoon.

News 2 did reach out to the United States Postal Service and was sent this response:

“The Postal Service appreciates its customers and always strives to provide the best possible service. Regarding delivery to the Stonemeade neighborhood, local management reports all available mail is being delivered daily. As information, Post Offices were closed and there was no mail delivery on Monday, February 20 in observance of Presidents Day. Local staff will closely monitor delivery activity to ensure continuing service improvements.“

News 2 did reach back out, mentioning neighbors hadn’t received mail since Thursday, Feb. 16, and that many neighbors used Informed Delivery offered by USPS that shows them previews of their mail.

News 2 also asked if they could provide a clearer answer on where their missing mail is, and was sent this additional statement to our request:

“Informed Delivery provides notifications for mailpieces arriving soon – not necessarily mailpieces arriving that same day. As stated, local management reports all available mail is being delivered daily to the Stonemeade neighborhood.“

News 2 sent USPS a list of all the streets in the neighborhood so they could further investigate.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — The brand new James Lawson High School in Bellevue will have its official ribbon cutting Thursday ahead of students starting the new school year.

It was decided Hillwood High school would move to a new school back in 2017. Now the years of discussions, raising money, and construction will finally come to an end with a celebration.

The new school is named after Rev. James Lawson who was a key leader in Nashville's Civil Rights movement as an organizer of the lunch counter sit-ins and teacher of non-violent protests to students — including U.S. Representative John Lewis. He continues to preach for social justice today.

Today's ribbon cutting is at the school at 9 a.m. and people can hear from Director of Metro Schools, Dr. Adrienne Battle, as well as Mayor John Cooper, Dr. Stephen Sheaffer, who is the Principal of the school, and other city leaders.

The new 307 thousand-square-foot building will be home to 150 teachers and staff and can accommodate up to 16 hundred students. It cost about 124 million dollars to build and includes classroms, a cafeteria, a student commons, an auditorium, a large gym, a smaller practice gym and wrestling rooms, and art, music, and choir rooms.

The outdoor area includes fields for baseball, softball, football, soccer, practice fields and a track.

It is also environmentally sustainable, with solar panels on the roof and a partial green roof.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — Trash is all over the side of a highway in Nashville’s Bellevue neighborhood.

Neighbors there take matters into their own hands after they say this has been an ongoing problem for years.

Neighbors tell FOX 17 News they've contacted the Tennessee Department of Transportation for years now, asking for better clean-up.

On Saturday, they got to work themselves. More than a dozen people spent their weekend picking up garbage along a three-mile stretch of highway 70 in Bellevue.

They said once the trash is gone within days, it re-appears.

The knights of Columbus at St. Henry Catholic Church have been trying to keep the route clean for the last decade and a half, but church member Josh Jackson said the garbage just keeps piling up.

“It's disheartening,” Jackson said.

Neighbors say the trash ranges from dirty diapers to cans to cigarette boxes to even large appliances.

“We've had a refrigerator out there before,” he said.

Jacob Tippets of the Bellevue Community Foundation said the debris left exposed to anyone passing by is dangerous.

“We're seeing all sorts of trash from, you know, fast food wrappers, to liquor bottles, and even paraphernalia, Tippets said.

Tippet has organized several clean-ups along this part of the highway in recent months, removing thousands of pounds of trash, but he said some local companies are adding to the mess.

“They’re part of the problem. So, we want people to keep an eye out for those sorts of things. Some of those are waste disposal companies that are dropping bags out of the back of their trucks,” Tippets said.

FOX 17 News reporter Payton Muse took these concerns to TDOT.

A representative responded that TDOT regularly picks up litter on state routes and highways in Davidson County.

In fact, TDOT said their crews just did a pick-up in this area. However the official also added that "litter in Nashville continues to be an issue we face."

We regularly conduct litter pickup on our state routes and interstates in Davidson County, which includes this area and road. And we have recently conducted a pickup in this area.

We do what we can to ensure that our state right of way is clean but litter in the Nashville area continues to be an issue we face.

“They do the best they can, as soon as they are told that they need to do something. So it takes a little bit of pushing, obviously a lot of pushing to get them to actually act and do something,” Tippet said.

Both the Bellevue Community foundation and the church said TDOT, and the Nashville Department of Transportation have helped some, but the area could be upkept much better.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - People in Bellevue strongly oppose a new massive apartment complex proposed off Interstate 40.

Many say the area is prone to flooding and not a good match for the neighborhood. Now, developers are looking to compromise and work with those who live nearby.

“I can’t think of a single person, up and down this street, that’s for this development,” said Brad Childress.

The development is 400 apartments off Coley Davis Road. It’s next to Interstate 40 and the Harpeth River, which flooded homes in the area in 2010.

“The area where they are proposing the apartments does flood, it has flooded,” said Laura Dixon, who lives off Coley Davis Road.

Developers with Cypressbrook said they know it floods. They plan to build the complex above 2010 levels when roads near the proposed development went underwater.

In the past few months, Cypressbrook came up with a solution. They want to raise Coley David Road between one to five feet. They said that will allow people who live at the complex and the surrounding area to drive out in an emergency.

Cypressbrook also plans to widen Coley Davis Road and create a left turn lane into the complex.

“Should May 2010 happen again, Coley Davis would remain dry all the way to Highway 70,” said Alan Thompson, a project engineer for Ariza Bellevue.

His goal is to not only save people in the new apartments should they flood, but the 2,000 people living beyond it.

“How is that going to serve a purpose?” said Dixon. “How is that going to lessen that amount of traffic that is going to be on this road?”

Dixon said the road won’t change her mind on the 400 units. In fact, she said it’s a waste of tax dollars.

“We have a road to get out, it’s called Coley Davis,” she said.

The project is still in the approval process. There are two community meetings for residents to voice their concerns. The first is on Jan. 31 at the Bellevue Community Center for those living in District 22. The second will be Feb. 2 and will be virtual for residents in District 35.
